Healthy Masculinity · Therapy in Santa Barbara

Intimacy
& Partnership

Closeness with room for both of you.

You may want a close relationship and still find yourself pulling away, becoming defensive, or trying to solve a problem when your partner wants to be heard. You may also be wondering how to ask for more space, care, or honesty without losing the connection.

Individual therapy offers room to understand your experience in relationships. We can explore the patterns you recognize, the expectations you bring, and the ways you want to respond differently.

Understanding your part.

We can look at what happens when you feel criticized, needed, disappointed, or uncertain about your partner's feelings. What do you reach for? What do you avoid? What becomes difficult to say?

This work keeps attention on your choices and experience. We can consider your partner's perspective without assuming we know their intentions or deciding that one person explains the whole relationship.

What we might explore.

Expressing needs and hearing differences

We can practice making a clear request, listening without preparing a defense, and staying curious when your partner experiences something differently. A request leaves room for the other person's response, including a boundary or a no.

Closeness and independence

You may want reassurance and also fear being too dependent, or value independence while feeling distant. We can explore the balance between connection and a separate sense of self, and what agreements or conversations might help.

Trust, conflict, and repair

We can make room for disappointment, breaches of trust, and the uncertainty of whether a relationship can continue. Repair involves attention to impact and behavior over time; it cannot be demanded or guaranteed.

Choosing the right space.

Individual therapy can help you understand your patterns and consider your next steps. When both partners want a shared space to work on the relationship, couples therapy may be another option to discuss.

My practice welcomes LGBTQIA+ relationships and consensually nonmonogamous partnerships. Your relationship's structure and agreements belong in the conversation.
