Emotional Expression
& Anger
More choices in the moments that matter.
You may know that something is wrong long before you can name what you feel. Perhaps you become impatient, go quiet, work harder, or find yourself in another argument you didn't mean to have.
Therapy offers space to slow down and understand those moments. We can explore anger alongside hurt, disappointment, fear, or shame, without assuming that any one feeling explains everything.
Making sense of what happens.
We can look at a specific exchange: what happened, what you understood it to mean, what you noticed in your body, and what you did next. The aim is to recognize the pattern early enough to have more choice in how you respond.
Your feelings deserve attention. How you express them matters, too. Understanding anger can go alongside taking responsibility for hurtful words or behavior.
What we might explore.
Finding words for your experience
If feelings were rarely discussed in your family, speaking about them may feel unfamiliar. We can practice distinguishing an emotion from an accusation and expressing a need without expecting someone else to guess it.
Boundaries without escalation
We can explore how to say no, ask for space, or disagree while respecting the other person's boundaries. When a conversation becomes too charged, we can think together about how to pause and return to it with intention.
Accountability and repair
An apology may begin a repair, but it does not decide how another person should feel or whether they are ready to reconnect. We can look honestly at your impact and what changes you want to make, while respecting the other person's choices.
Beyond holding it in.
You don't have to choose between suppressing everything and expressing yourself in ways you regret. We can work toward a wider range of responses: naming disappointment, asking for comfort, setting a limit, or acknowledging that you are not yet sure what you need.
A place to begin.
We can start with what has been on your mind, even if you don't yet have the words for all of it. I offer therapy in Santa Barbara and online throughout California.
