Friendship
& Belonging

A place in each other’s lives.

You may have people to work with, spend time with, or talk about everyday things, yet feel unsure who you could call when life becomes difficult. Or you may miss friendships that have become harder to maintain through parenting, distance, or changes in your life.

We can make room for the kind of connection you want. That might mean more companionship, greater honesty in existing friendships, or a sense of belonging that doesn't require you to hide important parts of yourself.

Being known takes time.

Reaching out can feel awkward, especially if you are accustomed to being self-reliant or worry about asking too much. We can explore what happens when you consider initiating a conversation, accepting care, or letting a friendship become more personal.

Closeness does not have to look the same in every relationship. Shared interests, humor, practical support, and direct conversations can each have a place. We can consider which forms of connection feel meaningful to you.

What we might explore.

Loneliness in a busy life

A full calendar may leave little space for relationships that feel sustaining. We can look at where your time and energy go, what you miss, and what kind of contact you want to make room for.

Trust, rejection, and reaching out

Experiences of exclusion, betrayal, or being misunderstood may shape what you expect from others. We can examine those expectations with care, alongside the boundaries that help you decide whom to trust and at what pace.

Friendships that change or end

When a friendship fades or ends, the loss may be difficult to acknowledge. We can talk about what the relationship meant, whether there is a conversation you want to have, and what you need as you move forward.

Belonging without fitting a mold.

You may be looking for connection across differences in culture, age, sexuality, gender, or life experience. There is room to explore where you feel welcome, where you feel guarded, and how you want to participate in community.

Therapy can be a place to understand these patterns and consider small, realistic steps toward relationships that feel more reciprocal.

A place to begin.

We can start with what has been on your mind, even if you don't yet have the words for all of it. I offer therapy in Santa Barbara and online throughout California.
