Adolescent Therapy

🌿 A Safe Place to Be Yourself

Adolescent Therapy in Santa Barbara

Being a teenager today can feel like trying to balance on shifting ground. There’s pressure — from school, friends, social media, and sometimes from within. You’re figuring out who you are, what you believe, and how you fit in. You might be dealing with stress, anxiety, relationship changes, identity questions, or family dynamics that feel complicated.

Therapy offers a space where you don’t have to have it all figured out.

It’s a space to slow down, be real, and find your way back to yourself — without judgment or pressure.

I work with teens to help them feel seen, understood, and supported. My approach is collaborative and down-to-earth. We’ll work together to build tools for confidence, calm, and connection while exploring what really matters to you.

What Adolescent Therapy Is

Adolescent therapy is counseling designed specifically for teens — focused on what you’re going through, what’s important to you, and how you want to grow.

It’s a place to talk openly about things that might be hard to share elsewhere: school stress, friendships, identity, family relationships, or the pressure to be perfect.

You don’t need to be in crisis to start therapy.

It’s also about getting to know yourself, learning how to handle big feelings, and finding new ways to express what you want and need.

What We Can Work On Together

Therapy is different for everyone. Some teens come in to talk about specific issues; others come to explore who they are or what’s next. Common themes include:

  • Stress, anxiety, or overwhelm

  • Sadness, depression, or feeling disconnected

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • Identity and belonging

  • Family or friendship conflicts

  • School pressure or perfectionism

  • Social media stress and comparison

  • Coping with trauma or loss

  • Boundaries, communication, and relationships

  • LGBTQIA+ identity and self-expression

Whatever you’re facing, therapy can help you feel less alone and more capable of handling what life brings.

How Therapy Works

When we meet, the first goal is to help you feel safe and comfortable.

I know that opening up to an adult — especially a new one — can feel awkward at first. We’ll take it at your pace. You’ll get to decide what you share, when, and how.

Therapy sessions might include:

  • Talking through what’s been going on and how it’s affecting you

  • Learning tools to manage stress, anxiety, or big emotions

  • Exploring patterns in relationships or self-talk

  • Practicing communication and boundary-setting skills

  • Reflecting on identity, values, and what gives your life meaning

It’s not about fixing you — because you’re not broken.

It’s about helping you understand yourself, build coping skills, and feel more grounded in who you are.

My Approach

I use a blend of humanistic, person-centered therapy and evidence-informed approaches tailored for teens. That means I listen deeply, respect your individuality, and help you discover your own strengths and wisdom.

Depending on your needs, we might also draw from:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help shift unhelpful thoughts and manage anxiety

  • Mindfulness-based strategies to calm your body and focus your mind

  • Trauma-informed care to help you feel safe and in control as you work through hard experiences

  • Animal-Assisted Therapy (with my certified therapy dog, Sophie) to help create comfort and emotional connection

  • Somatic techniques to help you recognize how emotions live in your body

No two teens are the same, so therapy will always be adapted to fit who you are and what you need.

A Place to Explore Identity and Expression

Adolescence is often a time of self-discovery — figuring out what feels true for you, and what doesn’t.

Therapy can be a supportive space to explore your identity, including gender, sexuality, culture, and personal values.

I welcome teens from all backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+ youth, those navigating multicultural identities, and anyone who feels “in between” or misunderstood.

You deserve a place where you can explore who you are — not who others expect you to be.

Therapy That Includes Your Family (When You Want It To)

Sometimes, part of feeling better means improving communication at home.

When it feels right, we can include parents or caregivers in certain sessions to help them better understand and support you.

This is always done with your input and comfort in mind — you’ll never be surprised or left out of that decision.

Therapy works best when everyone feels respected and heard.

Confidentiality and Safety

Everything you share in therapy is private.

That means I don’t share what you tell me with your parents or anyone else — unless there’s a serious concern about your safety or someone else’s.

This confidentiality helps build trust so you can speak freely and know that this space truly belongs to you.

Why Teen Therapy Matters

The teenage years can be an incredible time of growth — but also one of stress and self-doubt.

Therapy gives you tools to handle that stress, process what’s happening around you, and grow into a confident, grounded adult.

Many teens say that therapy helps them:

  • Feel less anxious and more in control

  • Understand and manage emotions more easily

  • Strengthen relationships and communication skills

  • Build self-esteem and self-acceptance

  • Navigate life transitions with greater ease

You don’t have to go through it alone. Having a safe, supportive space can make all the difference.

Taking the First Step

If you’re a teen looking for therapy in Santa Barbara, or a parent who wants to help your teen get support, I’m here to help.

Together, we can create a space where you feel heard, respected, and understood — where you can sort through what’s hard, celebrate what’s good, and keep growing into who you’re meant to be.

You deserve support that sees you for who you are — and who you’re becoming.
